which are the steps to modify the kernel that is in your machine (SuSE 10.2)?
Note: I usually get the newest kernel from the kernel.org then I use the config from the present machine, make the changes and compile. What I would like to know is how to modify like enable some modules within the kernel that I am using? Tell me if this question does not make any sense ;-)
do you want to customize kernel?
use config editor (there are few interfaces, provided by kernel: menuconfig, xconfig)
modify and compile kernel.
broch,
You misunderstood my question. I do use the config editor with vanilla kernels from kernel.org. I was wondering how can I modify the kernel that comes with the distro. This is why:
I am running SuSE 10.1 but I want to install 10.2. This new version has many changes. I have solve most of the problems except one the use of usb under VMware (palmpilot). In the kernel 2.6.18 the usbfs has been disable and I have to enable it. After doing it using the new kernel from kernel.org is working but I want to do it with the kernel that comes with the distro. The reason is simple: this system is for business use I want to use the kernel that is well tested. So far 2.6.20 is working ok but this is not a "beta" machine ;-)
