how do I mount my usb stick?

I'm a fairly new Suse linux user. i installed it on a jewel laptop it's running just great but I have trouble with usb sticks. My laptop has a SD card reader and if I put in a card it gets mounted in de media directory as 'usbstick' and apears as an icon in the konqueror browser under the devices tab next to my harddrive and CD Recorder. The name the SD card gets is USB Hard Disc (/dev/sdb1). I would like Suse to do the same with my USB stick but I cant realy figgure out how.

I've tried looking at /etc/fstab I can see this line:

/dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder subfs

this mounts my cd recorder in /media/cdrecorder right?

I also have this line:

usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs auto 0 0

this would mount usb devices in /proc/bus/usb. I understand that a SD slot can only hold data devices and an USB connection can hold both data devices and things like mouses or keyboards so I expect there to be a difference. Can my system be set up so that if I put in an USB stick it shows up on the devises tab automatically. as it is I haven't been able to see the data on my USB stick. I'm also wondering why there is no mentioning of the SD card reader in /etc/fstab. Is this because it's actualy just another USB device to the system? if so why doesn't my system treat actual USB data sticks in the same way? (i.e. present me with an icon in konqueror immediately after I plug it in)

Issue the command given below and then insert the USB stick, you should then determine the USB device on the system

#dmesg

Based on the output of dmesg, mount the device on the filesystem:

mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbstick

Make sure that the directory to where you are mounting the usb device already exists. In this case /mnt/usbstick exists prior to mounting.

I'm undoutably doing something quite stupid but all I get is the message that special device /dev/sda1 does not exist. Would it be helpfull if I gave all the lines of the diagnostic message pertaining to usb ports?
