gnome wont work...:(

okay...heres the deal...
just upgraded from Fedora Core 1 to SuSE....yay...
everything seems to be working fine...except ive grown to love gnome from my days back in fedora and i wish to go back to gnome....but never again to fedora...

im running suse 9.1 Personal...
how do i get gnome to work...preferably easily...

also...is there a 'yum-like program' for suse??...that would make it a hole lot easyer to install things....

thanks in advance...

You can try installing Gnome with YaST I think. Gnome isn't standard installed on the Personal edition... I think...

ftp.suse.com is a good server, but the speed depends on where you live.

ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.1/

Add this to the list in YaST.

server: ftp.suse.com
path: /pub/suse/i386/9.1

HMm, move the FTP source to the top of the list. Then go to install or remove packages and search for "gnome"

Hi- I use 9.0 pro but it should be the same.
What I did was check in yast add remove software
I removed everything KDE and I mean everything
I then upgraded online and only allowed gnome stuff.
At least in 9.1 pro - gnome was there it just couldn't be accessed with KDE in the way
There is also a command that I cannot re-find that allows you in root to replace kde with gnome [or in my case FVWM2]
If someone can or if you know that command you are in like flint.

However even knowing [or not knowing that in my case] that you can even upgrade everything and select packages and don't allow kde in.

That worked for me too.

ditch gnome and get happier with KDE

but if you must......

-an easy way to find ftp's that will work as install sources is to open yast and go to the update section (YOU)
-Find a server near you.
-Go online and open the ftp location and find the path to the edition you have and transfer that location to the install source section (need to add a source)(move it to the top of the list).
-depending on your connection and the server load it could take a few minutes to sync, but you will have access to all of that server's packages.
