GeForce 6600GT & Suse 9.2 x86_64?

AMD Athlon 64 3000+
MSI NX6600GT AGP
Suse 9.2 x86_64

Just bought a MSI NX6600GT AGP Card. Removed the GeForce 5200 (which worked great with 3D acceleration). Put in the 6600 and my machine would lock up when booting.

I can get to a console now and run command line Yast2 and even start Sax (which starts the X server for configuration) but Suse just doesn't seem to see my card. Even if I manually select 6600 GT from the drivers list it returns a "no usable configurations" error.

I've even updated the kernel, uninstalled Xorg server, nvidia dummy modules (?), re-installed and nothing.

What is the package name of the nvidia drivers Suse supplies with Yast? Should I bother trying to to the manual install of the drivers (nvidia .run files, kernel source, compilers, etc?...)

Do some of you have an nvidia 6600 GT running under Suse 9.2 x86_64?

Any suggestions?

I have just installed the same card this week on a 64 bit 9.2 system (a bit freaky as my previous card was a GeForce 5200).

What I did was with my previous card installed change the settings in yast to show the new graphic card details. Close down and put the new card in, restart and then correct the settings in yast.

Everything works OK expect that yast shows 3d as unavailable - when it is running fine.

No 3D acceleration? Kinda defeats the purpose of buying the 6600 doesn't it?

I replaced the 5200 because I bought the AMD 64, MB, Put in 1 GB of RAM and my games were still running slow (15-25 fps in Joint Operations [Win XP] and 17-27 in America's army [Win XP and 32-bit Linux). Finally getting a 64 bit Linux OS installed helped a bit for America's Army (it is still a 32 bit app after all). But the 5200 is just a pathetic card for anything 3D. Under XP with the 6600GT I now get 30-65 fps in Joint Ops and 60-90 fps in America's army. Probably middle of the line, but I can't afford a 6800 Ultra. I'd like to be able to play AA under 64-bit linux though.

I'm debating if I should try another distro...Mandrake or Fedora. Last time I tried Fedora (2 I think), it trashed my partition table. Maybe I'll do a massive backup and try them both...

Anyone else? I know some people have the 6800 running. Shouldn't be much different should it?

yast shows this sometimes.that's why the nvidia suse install directions say there is no need to enable 3-d.

Well I got it. I went the manual route and downloaded the nvidia drivers from their site (7174 I believe).

I used command line Yast2 to update the kernel, install kernel source, gcc, and make.

(BTW for any noobs reading: When your boot options come up type "init 3" into the commands line that appears on the bootloader. This will prevent X from trying to load and bring you to a command prompt. From there you can login as root and run Yast2 to configure your system.)
Followed a couple instructions on this post:
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/post-190617.html

Especially the:

Quote:
make cloneconfig
make prepare-all
Then I followed the Nvidia instructions:

Quote:
2) Use the nvidia installer for 1.0-7174.

modprobe agpgart
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-7174-pkg2.run -q

3) Configure X.Org with

sax2 -m 0=nvidia (0 is a digit, not a letter!)
(My modprobe agpgart didn't work but a utility called testgart confirmed that I had the agp requirements already in my kernel)

After SaX started I picked nvidia 6600GT driver and selected my monitor and restarted. Sweet 3D! GLXGears confirms it (as does the Nvidia logo coming up when starting X). I have yet to try America's Army though... ).

It actually went quite well. Hope I didn't break anything else....if so, maybe it's time for Fedora.

Not sure what's going to happen when Suse tries to update my nvidia driver (if it does) though.

Anyways, hope it helps somebody.

Edit:
P.S. btw it does show 3D acceleration as "unavailable" also. The command line Yast showed it as being "enabled" if I recall correctly.
