Does SUSE 9.2 Pro really suck?

All good comments in this tread..!

I've been a dedicated windows-guy for more than 20 years..
The reason I have not switched to LINUX long time ago, is that I heard all around me that it's only for geeks..!? And that it was very difficult to install - and run..
I finally pulled myself together, and set up a PC to install a brand new clean install of LINUX..

First I tried with Fedora Core 3.. Nice try.. But not quite what this windows-guy expected..although it certainly looks great..

Then I did a full clean-up, and installed SuSE 9.1 Professional.. Wow..!
I have to admit: this is a fantastic OS..!

The main reason for my interest and curiosity with LINUX is that I want to set up a PC to work as a web-server and email-server - and I bet you guys - that I'm now all go-minded for this distro - and would not hesitate to upgrade to 9.2..

I'm very impressed with LINUX - and also the community around it..
I know I have a long way to go, before I master this OS, and before I can set up my own server.. But I'm definitely going for it..

See the link in my sig below to correct the 'lack of packages'. The packman site adds one click installation for thousands of packages, and it is really easy to set up as a YaST source.

No, it's even better than I expected. The only problem I have is having to use Windows when I need to use
my scanner. Its an HP Scanjet 3570C and probably is not supported by any other Linux distro's anyway. Maybe
by the time SuSE 9.3 comes out it will be supported.

SuSE 9.1 and 9.2 both share the same problem: no support for the VIA VT6420 (VT8237) SATA RAID controller!

But wait, I couldn't find any distro so far who has it..

Any ideas anyone?

Suse 9.1 and 9.2 are the first distros that I got working flawlessly on my IBM Thinkpad X40. APM/suspend to RAM/disk worked out of the box using 9.1 Pro and ACPI/suspend to RAM/disk worked out of the box using 9.2 Pro, which I am running now. With ACPI I can get up to 5.5 hrs of battery life. Even setting up and configuring the built in Intel Pro 2100 wifi card was a breeze. 9.2 even has a profile manager...very nice for multiple wireless profiles. I installed mplayer and the necessary video codecs for DivX, DVDs, etc., and installed mplayerplug-in for Firefox using apt4rpm...kiss RPM hell goodbye! I bought 9.2 online at the "reduced upgrade" price. Very impressive.

Mad_C when you go to install SuSE on your RAID controller does the YaST partitioner see the HDDs that are attached through your RAID controller or do they just not show up at all?

The last time I checked the 2.6 kernel does not support hardware RAID, however it does support the most of the SATA RAID controllers I've come across, just not the Hardware RAID function. What you have to do if you want RAID is to set your controller to RAID 0 (no RAID) and then install SuSE. Using YaST Partitioner you then create a software RAID.

RPMS are not hard to find. Just find a good mirror site and maybe another site with extra packages (like Packman's) and add them to your YaST sources. That will allow you to have quick and easy installs of just about any software.

On the rare occassions that I haven't found rpms, I just compile from source and then checkinstall (instead of make install, to make the rpms myself).

Just finised installing 9.2 PRO... and all I can say is WOW!

It's really a beautiful operating system... like... everything looks like it fits perfectly... i'm simply amazed. Great work Suse/Novell has done...

Only two small problems.... I can't select the resolution I usually run (1600x1200) I can choose anything above or below it, just not that one... don't know why yet... I think it's a problems with the ATI driver.

And my sound doesn't work for some reason, it worked great under 9.1 Personal, and even 9.2 detected the same driver as 9.1, but it gives me some strange error when I go into the config.

Alas... I'm confident i'll find the answer somewhere, or that someone can help me out.... but so far.... Suse get's my 2 thumbs up for sure. It's so good I've already forgotten about my XP install

thanks for the hint, but I really don't want to have to reinstall the WinXP partition yet..
And yes, Yast sees the HD's, but only as seperate partitions and not as the RAID array they are configured as.

newbie too, here.

tried some live cds like knoppix and gnoppix, got enthusiastic about linux, decided to give it a try.

installed mandrake 10.1 official download. couldn't get it to install properly any driver (had to reset X11 to make it start again, this kind of things).

installed fedora FC3, nicer shot indeed. however, had issues with codecs and packages for the x86_64 architecture i am running with.

installed SuSE 9.2 eval DVD, and i'm really happy with it. only issue: anything that is not on the original DVD may give some harsh times to install. oh well. i think it's more than a good start for me

I have been using SuSE 9.0 Pro for about a year or so and recently upgraded to 9.2. With the exception of having to find the timidity RPM, as the upgrade deleted it, 9.2 really rocks.

I used Mandrake since version 7.1? through 8.2. It was excellent also. I have installed Simply Mepis on my wife's computer and it seems to be interesting also. Just have to learn it. However, SuSE works great for what I do. Still looking for a DVD movie player, however.

Go to http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/home.html and install apt for Suse. Then get libdvdcss and xine and/or mplayer. You can then watch all the DVD movies you want.

Well, after all I read here, I'm gonna give it a try too. Suse 9.1 actually did really fine for me, but with 9.2 I'm hoping for better WLAN support for my notebook. Unfortunately it's a broadcom device, so I'll probably have to stick to ndiswrapper (if that'll work anyway).

Well, I just installed SuSE 9.2 from a magazine cover disc this weekend. I used to have Mandrake 10.0, but since I wanted to repartition the drive I thought I'd do a clean install of something new.

I have several issues:

Can't get USB connection to digital camera to work. /var/log/messages revieals resmgr reports error codes, so i suspect something fundamental is wrong.
Can't install from source (some problem with package mangement at the ./configure step I think)
Can't install Win4Lin (for those Windows apps I really can't do without.

I don't know how easy these will be to sort out. :-(
But I will persist for a week before deciding whetjer or not to install Mandrake again.
