add-on cd suse 10.1

leading to a possibly stupid question: on the official suse-download-site there is now a link to "add-on" cd which is said to contain software that is commercial and not covered by the osi-license. does this explicitly mean that i do not need to install all these extra-things that i need to watch movies, listen to music etc., that caused me so much trouble the last time? a quick search didn't answer my question. i here have a thread related to that.

regards & big thanks!

Yes. It seems so. I downloaded an mp3 from the webbernet to a fresh Suse 10.1 install after using the add-on disk, and it opened in RealPlayer with no trouble at all. I haven't gotten to testing video yet, but I'd guess that everything but libdvdcsss would be in there if mp3 is.

The addon CD allowed me to perform a number of web and multimedia function I had to get from many different sources in the past. libdvdcss isn't on the CD because it isn't strictly legal in the US. It is however available from site in countries which permit its use.

Well you can go here or you can go here and you usually end up with DVD support.

I would recommend installing the Packman repository the same way as with version 10.0.

http: packman.iu-bremen.de
dir: suse/10.1

Then use the Install Software to get the packages that you'll need. For example, mplayer, libxine, etc....

Don't forget to grab the libdvdcss from videolan.org for the encryption stuff.

Just came back to SUSE (10.1) after many years with Debian. Just installed it last night/this morning. Looks great! I've been searching the Web looking for instructions on hot to use the Addon CD. Can someone give me a hand? Or link? Thanks.

The install process had a check box for the addon CD but I believe you can use "YasT - Add-on Product." It will end up being listed as an YaST installation source.

Fargos, thanks for the reply. After doing some more digging I came across the solution. I was able to add Flash, Java, Acrobat reader and Realplayer. Wish there was more. Still have more digging to do. Thanks.

does the realplayer-installation cover all kinds of videos like all kinds of .mpg and .wmv, as well as .mov (qt?) and similar? what about .mp3-support?
it's the "digging" that i really dislike. i travel to germany on tuesday to get my computer, really looking forward to it! after downloading the 6cds for suse 10.1 i was really eager to use them on some computer, hard to wait...

Also get mplayer from packman. It comes with lots of video codecs. Viewing commercial DVDs also requires libdvdcss which isn't legal in many countries. It is however available on the web.

mplayer is not available in the following folder:
http://packman.iu-bremen.de/suse/10.1/i686/
shall i get it from a folder like "srpm"? i think, that's only source...!? in the same folder, there are some files which obviously are newer than files from this source. at the same time, there are a lot of "libxine..."-rpms there, should i better stick to the source with files from 2005?

i try to download everything i need until today afternoon because i do not have a proper internet connection when i fetch my notebook. really looking forward to that now!

i686 refers to to being tuned for a specific set of processors in the x86 family. i586 works on them all. Here's packman's i586 mplayer.
