solaris to linux x-server (continued from networking forum)
post 1 (from linux networking forum)
can anyone tell me a step by step method or point me at a way to actually log into my linux x-server from a remote solaris machine running SunOS 5.7?
i have successfully used vnc to do this from solaris but would like to try it directly from the log in screen without a browser....
i have tried unblocking port 6000 in my router firewall config and then just trying to log in to my remote ip address, but solaris says
remote host could not be accessed. the remote host name is valid but may not be running dtlogin (or other xdisplay manager)
post 2 (from linux networking forum)
okay, i enabled xdmcp under the system icon during log in to redhat.
this works on port 177 with udp so i added this port forwarding to my router firewall.
going back into work this morning i typed my server ip address into the remote login box of solaris and it worked.
the next problem, the screen is just grey with a big black x that can be moved around as a mouse cursor. there are no options available.
is this because of incompatability with the xconfig file or something? i use dual monitors at home and one monitor at work.
any comments or suggestions are welcome...
