Or maybe Netbeans is optimized for Solaris, and not optimized as heavily for Linux?

netbeans is 100% java so can hardly be optimized for any specific O/S.
JVM performance may vary depending on the O/S though.

It varies greatly, Windows uses it horribly in comparison to Linux-Based machines. Well, at least that's the case with java itself (IE: Chats, etc.) Although I've never been able to get Java apps to run in Mozilla Firefox on Ubuntu, even after installing Restricted Ubuntu Extras (Which comes with JAVA and JAVA Web Start)

Macs seem to run them better than Windows though.

I have no particular problem with Ubuntu and Java. You may want to discuss that on the Ubuntu forum.
