Hello, everyone. Yesterday, after replacing the cdrom device in my Ultra 5, I was finally able to "boot cdrom - nowin" and get through the first 3 installation disks before I got a rather nasty java exception. I chose, by the way, the "install everything" option and did so via the console text option since the boot didn't recognize any of the 256MB of RAM that passed tests. As a note, this machine, until that time, was running Solaris 9 just fine (well, except for the fact that dtrace was not available).

Not having a whole lot of sparc installation experience, I am attributing this, in order of preference, to (a) a bad burn or (b) a fairly suitable but still not acceptable cdrom device.

After booting from the installation target device, the system appears to be mostly complete. I know that it is incomplete, at least, because most of the header files are missing from /usr/include.

Can I complete the installation after getting good burns of disks 4 and 5 or do I start over from scratch? I'd rather not do the latter if I don't have to.

Well, I decided that trying again from scratch really isn't so bad. Before I did, I noted that the amount of swap space created in the first attempt was dreadfully insufficient. I certainly didn't ask it to configure the system that way. I'm guessing, of course, but it's possible that the installer is not forgiving w.r.t. insufficient swap.

At any rate, after the second attempt, the installation completed without a hitch.
