Hi,
I just purchased a Solaris 10 3/05 OS without doing much research, and now I've found out that there are many releases of the OS, the latest being Solaris 10 06/06. Which is the difference among these releases? Do I have to upgrade to the latest one in order to get all of the benefits from the OS?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks again jlliagre. You're making my life easier.
I've notice that Solaris 10 6/06 release offers new useful features that are worth having installed on my PC.
One last question and I leave you alone for a while, lol.
Can I upgrade to the latest version using the Upgrade Tool included in Solaris 10 3/05? I hope so.
Thanks for all your help.
Solaris 11/06 just came out yesterday (along with the official release of J2SE6). I haven't done my 11/06 upgrade yet, but historically upgrades were very easy. Boot off new CD/DVD and let it do the upgrade!

Solaris 11/06 just came out? I wish I had known that before ordering my copy of Solaris 6/06 from Sun. Well, I guess I can always upgrade online.
hi max,
did it work?
if so what and where is the upgrade tool?
Hi bigearsbilly,
I have not tried to update it yet. I ordered the 6/06 version of Solaris 10 from Sun instead. Now I just found out that Solaris 11/06 is out. Too late for me, I'll have to upgrade online.
I'm building a new computer, based on the Opteron processor, so I don't really know if Solaris is going to be 100% conpatible with my new hardware.
I've had good results running Solaris on various hardware. The only issues that I've run into are with embedded network interfaces, sometimes they're not recognized. Haven't had any other issues that I can think of.
I can only think of one machine that I've ever failed to get Solaris working on, and that was just a couple weeks ago (maybe just last week?). Anyways, it was a Dell PowerEdge server that was even listed in the Solaris HCL! Not sure what it's problem was, I turned off RAID just like you have to do (Dell's PERC seems to be an Adaptec that's modified just enough to not work with standard drivers anymore) and it would install fine, but it could never find the hard drive on boot! Odd, since it would find it with CentOS (however, CentOS would blow up and kernel panic whenever I would try to do software updates on that machine, could be bad hardware)...
how do i know which version i have installed (i know i have 10)... if i do a uname -r = 5.10, does this mean that i have Solaris 10 5/6 ? like the 5 version year 2006 ?
