Solaris 10 3/05 Installation

Hello Jlliagre,
I'm going to ask this question directly to you because you're the one who's helped me in the past, so I'm going to ask for your help once more.
I've installed Solaris 10 3/05. The OS installed without any problems, and it is working, although I don't have internet because I need a NIC driver, which I've downloaded, but have not yet installed because I don't know how. I donwloaded the tar file and saved it on a floppy disk (perhaps not the best place but that's what I did) and now I want to loaded it on Solaris and hopefully install it and have my internet working so I can update the system to the latest release.
I installed the Documentation DVD and the Software Companion DVD because I want to use KDE as my Desktop Environment. Don't know how to get KDE to load at bootup either.
But the most important thing for me now is to ge my internet working, I'll deal with the other issues later.
Can you please help me out? I appreciate it.
Thank you very much.

Le me add that I know how to unzip the file, all I need to know is how to copy it from the floppy to the File manager so I can install it.

Just run "volcheck -v /dev/diskette", assuming your floppy drive is recognized by the O/S and is using pcfs, you'll have then the floppy content under /floppy/floppy0.

Thanks jlliager.
Now that you mention it, I'm not sure if my system sees the floppy drive, because I have not seen any icon for it. Let's see what happens, after I've done what you said.
Thanks again.

Not working

Well, it is not working, gave me an error about some illegal use of the command volcheck.
Anyway, I notice that when I insert the floppy in the drive it does not come on as it does on Windows and Linux. I saw there is a folder for diskette0 in "dev". I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Think I'm going to copy the file to a cd, it may be easier for me to loaded it.
I'll let you know.
Thanks.

still not working

I copied the file to a CD and still does not work. When I insert the CD in the drive all SOlaris does is attempt to format the CD, it is not reading it at all.
USB Key? NO, I wish I had one.
I really hate to give up so easily but unless I install this driver I won't be able to use the internet, and without it it is not really worth it having Solaris installed. I might have to go back to Linux.
Thanks for all your help Jlliagre.

When I insert the CD into the driver a window pops up asking me if I want to format the CD-RW so I can write data onto it.

hello,

Atually ur not able to use internet in solaris,

i to faced with same problem, but i solved it,

in this way, frist i connected a external nic on my pci solt, and ttried to install drivers for it (Realteck 8139c nic card) but the drivers are not attached to the device.

Later i bought onboard lan motherboard, then Solaris os is detected the LAN and then i Installed drivers for it,

Then Mianly i Configured my system as DHCP Server while installin solaris, that my system atuomatically IP is allcoted by the Internet service provided, now i can use internet in solaris.

i hope it will useful. may be it will proper answer for u. if not leave it

Thanks for sharing your experience, but what makes you think installing a network driver would resolve a CD-RW access issue ?

Edit: Okay, the root problem is indeed about a network driver card installation, but your "buy a new mainboard with onboard LAN" solution is kind of overkill.

with onboard lan the solaris is able to detect devices.unless it won't. HOW CAN WE INSTALL DRIVERS TO NON DETECTED DEVICE,

SO, THERE MUST BE A DETECTED DEVICE, Actually it is my personal

opinion. Is there any scripts that make to detect the device.

help me to know.

You certainly can install drivers for undetected devices, this has nothing to do with the fact the device is on-board or not.

After the driver is installed, if it match the previously undetected device, then the device will detected and hopefully usable.

I believe it is supported out of the box (rtls driver), at least is it with Solaris Express.
