I used the blastwave and one of the mirrors on the opencsw website.
The opensolaris package manager did not have vlc in the repository.. i have now checked how to add a repository with the pkg command and found out that i could add blastwave etc. to the opensolaris package manager but i can only find blastwave.network.com:10000 on almost every site that has this and this mirror does not work.. i have googled for some time and cannot seem to find any other repositories that has vlc..

could someone please advise on how to install for example vlc here, i cant find any repo that has the package and from articles/forums i see that several other people are having problems installing this and other packages for that matter because for example the repo lifewithsolaris etc has been shutdown

I don't use blastwave as it used to duplicate a lot of libraries/binaries already in the OS instead of using them. Not sure if they changed this design decision.
It is true LWS was closed but here are repositories that have multimedia support:

i added the repositories and when i search for vlc i got several packages for vlc up but when i enter "pkg install SFEvlc" it only says that no matching package could be found.. i have tried with the whole FMI as well but it didnt work.. it only worked when i tried the src package which i have to compile.. well, compiling isnt a problem but when you get dependencies all the time it is.. thats why we use package managers.. is there something im doing wrong here?

Not sure, perhaps a "pkg refresh" is needed.
