Newbie's Questions about Solaris

I am new to Opensolaris,
1) does it have DVD image that contain many packages including openoffice? where to download? I only have live CD.
2) its package manager can update latest version of software, e.g. firefox ?
3) does it play MP3?

Normally, you install packages from the network through the package manager.
You can also download OpenSolaris 2009.06 full repository from genunix.org. See:
http://www.genunix.org/dist/indiana/README.osol-repo

Unlikely, OpenSolaris as a distribution is discontinued.

3) does it play MP3?
Likely after you install third party codecs.

Possibly but I have no idea how to check. You might have a look at this project.

you said opensolaris was stopped? no more new version to be released?
the link
http://www.genunix.org/dist/indiana/README.osol-repo
does not provide direct link to download all packages.

The official successor is Solaris 11 Express. There are also forks and derived distributions like OpenIndiana, Schillix, Nexenta and others.

the new solaris 11 is here
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/se...ads/index.html

Oracle Solaris 11 Express 2010.11 LiveCD for x86
The LiveCD provides administrators with an opportunity to explore the Oracle Solaris 11 Express environment without installing it on a system. The system boots off the media directly allowing administrators to start the installer should they choose to install it to a system.

Download Download x86 (687 MB)

I am not sure after booting into liveCD, on the desktop does it have an icon for installation onto HDD?
previous opensolaris has it.
