New to solaris, some basic questions

As a short intro:

(I apologize in advance if this makes absolutley no sence, im a bit tired right now)

Ive been using NT4 over the past... 5 years... maybe more (at home). File server, http/ftp offline test-server etc... Because its fairly simple, not much to it, just from messing around and learning on my own, I would say that im fairly knowledgable on how to coax NT4 into doing what I want. This was back when I had 486's, and my Compaq proliants with quad 220Mhz pentium pros. NT4 is now harder than ever to have *new* software function, and Im moving onto things a bit more powerfull and modern than a Pentium-pro. I can talk someone (well, used to be able to, not sure anymore) over the phone through setting up IIS or apache on NT4, setting up the DNS, routing, DHCP etc... Ive just done it so many times over the years.. No, I wouldnt be able to set up NT4 servers for say, a large office with several thousand users, I dont know everything, just enough to get what I need done. I hope to get to that level in solaris.

Im looking to get a server co-located within the year, on a 10Mb unmetered connection (up to 100mbs if needed). Could I run NT4 and do what I need? Apache 2.0, mysql, php... It all 'mostly' works under NT4, but I dont think its that great of an idea, to use it on a modern high-traffic web server.

This is where solaris came in. Ive used linux in the past, ran redhat 7 occasionaly on one of the compaqs, running a freebsd based router distro as my internet router... Out of frustraition, and the urge to try something new, I decided to download solaris. Created a new VM in Vmware, installed it on a 10gb drive, and I seem to like it. Im not sure how to explain it, I just get less angry and frustraited using it, as opposed to redhad or centos.

Now, Possibly just because I still dont know what im doing... but each linux distro seems to have its differences, much like going from different versions of windows. You can learn quite a bit on one os, and switch to another and have to re-learn things. Before I get too much of my time tied up with learning a distro, I want to be sure im looking in the right places. I could spend 3 months of my free time and weekends banging my head against a wall learning solaris, then find out that it isnt a good choice for a server, and have to re-learn something else.

What will I be using? Im unsure... I could start out with a used dual P3, or a newer xeon box. Either way, it will most likely have some form of RAID... The details are fuzzy, its all in the planning stages right now. I go to school full time, my free-time is fairly limited, so I cant devote hours and hours to learning solaris, just a half-hour to an hour here or there. I feel its doable in a year.

<end intro>

Main thing of all, I want to be sure solaris is a good choice, for a web server os. Just php, mysql, and http... nothing else going on. Ive heard solaris comes with "containers", similar to Virtual-machines in Vmware, im assuming I can have different processess/applications running inside these containers, and not have a crash or some form of virus/DOS attack affect everything else?

Im not really sure what to ask... everythings changed so much since the days of the P-Pro/NT4... I cant even think of what I was going to ask now.

Anyone with some experiance in solaris, please point me in the right direction as far as what the correct approach is for learning how to learn using solaris as a web-server (as far as solaris and software is concerned). Everythings different to the point where Im not even sure if im coming or going.

It's certainly a good choice. Many companies use Solaris to run their web servers, individual use was less frequent, but is raising as all the software required is now free.

That is correct, outside virus are not to be expected under Unix. These containers, more commonly called zones, are more lightweight than vmware.

There is a large amount of documentation about Solaris at docs.sun.com.
You also need to make a decision about which web server you want to use with Solaris.
You have the choice to go the Apache way or use Sun own server (Sun Java Enterprise System Web Server).
