network connection problem

Hey all.

I just installed Solaris 8 on my workstation. I tried connecting to a newtork and I'm having a problem. I'm using a static IP address for the host, I disabled DHCP, enabled DNS for which I provided IP address. I also disabled proxy to directly connect to the Internet. I am using a regular twisted-pair Ethernet connection. But, for some reason, even though I'm physically connected to the network, I don't have any connection to any other host on the network. I tried pinging the DNS and other hosts but I don't get any responses. I pinged myself and it came back saying that the host is alive. Does anyone have any clue of what am I supposed to do? Is there a setting that I supposed to provide/change? Do I need to configure my NIC? Thanks.

r.

There are basically four files you need to configure to get your solaris box on your network:
1) /etc/hosts
2) /etc/defaultrouter
3) /etc/resolv.conf
4) /etc/hostname.hme0 (or whatever the interface name is).

You will need to restart your network services after changing some of the files above. Refer to the man pages for each step to get the correct syntax for each file. Type ifconfig -a to confirm your network settings for each interface.

As a side note:
If want want to have a "wizard" like interface to guide you through the network setup you can try using the "/usr/sbin/sys-unconfig" utility (need to be root). It will basically unconfigure all of your network settings and then prompt you to enter each piece of information neccessary to properly configure your network for you.

Hope this helps.
