Need something to do

Bit of advice needed:

I have 'liberated' a Sparcstation IPX from the engineering dept (used to be a CAM workstation). I've re-installed a clean Solaris 2.6 & SWS 1.0.

I now need to give this box a job; I can't junk it as it still works and I have a policy of not disposing of anything until it's completely dead (I have some 486's running linux doing various jobs around the place).

I was going to give it SETIathome to run continously but I can't get it to pickup work packages from behind my proxy.

Any suggestions as to what jobs 'sparcy' could do?

(Spec is IPX@40MHz, 40MB RAM, 250MB HD, CD-ROM)

TIA

Ah, a person after my own heart.

You really need to give it more disk space for it to be really useful, try and find some old SCSI disks and you should be able to do something with it.

Here are some suggestions:

1. An IPX makes an excellent low volume firewall. There's a variety of free firewalls you can install, I like ipfilter (.http://coombs.anu.edu.au/~avalon/)
2. It can make an acceptable file server. Two (not exclusive) sub-options:
- NFS
- Install Samba (http://www.samba.org/) if you have PCs needing access to reliable centralised file and print services.
3. Print server
4. Departmental web server (Apache/ PHP/Perl etc...)

I'm sure there's more that you could do, but the above is a good start.
