Installing Solaris 10 x86 on a. Dell X620?
1. Dell OPTIPLEX GX620??
Is this possible to acheive?
I do not have one as of yet, but Im thinking to get rid of my old PC (which runs Solaris 10 fine)...
2. And speaking in terms of this question:
What happens if someone buys a new PC either any Brand name and wishes to install Solaris 10 on it??
Then, how will that user know what or which type of Hardware is compatible or not? So, in other words, a user of that new PC would have to wait until the install fails to find out what when wrong and then purchase that hardware that would be suited for Solaris installation??
I dont understand it and I was wondering about it for some time now...So that user EVEN if they go to the Solaris Compatiblity website to check...they still would not know what exact model or type of hardware they would get out from that new purchased PC....Its kind of like playing Russian Roulette....
Please inform me about this.
3. And my other question would be that does Solaris 10 x86 runs better on old PCs then new PCs??
Haven't had any issues with Solaris running on any of the whiteboxes I've built (and I don't bother to check the HCL, I just buy what I want and throw it together).

Ive been thinking...That if I go with Micron...since they have better support for Governments including Federal and Military support...Solaris may have a better chance of running on those perhaps.
Well, I did have a Micron in the passed and yes, i did install Solaris without any issues...
Your likley to have more sucess with Open Solaris, the fedora of Solaris 10 ( lookout for Soalris Express delevlopers Edition, a.k.a. Solaris 11 (beta)

This tool works fairly good. It works on Linux, Mac & Windows, because it is a .jnlp (java webstart). It even shows any known 3rd party drivers for your hardware devices.

My experience is that it runs best on hardware that's not too brandnew.
So every motherboard of known brand, being about 1 year old is OK (generally speaking).

I installed Solaris 10 (x86) two times...one for the old PC that I had...and now, this...(which was built by a PC technician) and no Hardware issues had occurred...
And to mention...that Im still running Solaris 10 (before built 06/06) was even released....
