How to READ Solaris version

Hi Guys,

Would you please help me find/know the Solaris OS version.
How to read this version?

Code:
-bash-3.00$
-bash-3.00$ cat /etc/release
                       Solaris 10 5/09 s10s_u7wos_08 SPARC
Copyright 2009 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Use is subject to license terms.
                             Assembled 30 March 2009
What is the 5/09 here?

What is this whole line mean ?

Code:
Solaris 10 5/09 s10s_u7wos_08 SPARC

I want to use this upgrade cds to upgrade os.
http://unixpackages.com/packages/companion-cd

Solaris 10, built in may 2009, for SPARC, that's the 7th update, wad of stuff (just means it's not the initial release), internal build #8.

The companion CD isn't going to update the OS, it is just, as it names suggest, an add-on composed of a collection of freewares.

As I wrote, the companion CDs contain a collection of open source freewares compiled for Solaris 10. There is a list of packages on the page you linked to.

Thanks a lot for you valuable words!

But I am still don't understand why am I asked to get version of OSs and then decide which CD to buy?

Are you going to update packages on Server, stuff like that, why do we need companion CD ?

The answer is on the page you posted a link to:
Make sure that you know for sure which level of Solaris you are using by looking at the /etc/release file on your system. For example, on a SPARC Solaris 10 Update 9 system, you will see an s10s_u9wos entry or you might see s10x_u8wos for x86 Solaris 10 Update 8.

The companion CD is a collection of software built for/with a specific update. You probably can use a lower companion CD update with a newer Solaris update but the opposite might not be true. That's up to your administrators/users to say what they need in the companion CD.

Have a look to this blog for a description of the update process: https://blogs.oracle.com/patch/entry...10_8_11_update

As already stated, you can't use this CD to achieve this.

One question I have is:-

Suppost If I am having OS Solasis 10 update 7 then for this system which companion CD should I should go for
-1. Solaris 10 update 8
OR
-2. Solaris 10 update 10.

(I am new to Solaris particularly this stuff, so don't really know ,what exactly we are asked to do by client, looks like having latest packages inventory???)

Thanks a lot for all your post, really helpful, making my interest in Sun stronger.

None of the above. That would be the Solaris Companion CD for Solaris 10 update 7.

Thanks!!
Let me just confirm.

1.You mean to say for Solaris 10 Update 7 , I should go for Solaris 10 Update 7 Companion CD ?? YES / NO ?

2.Why so? Why not Solaris 10 Update 8 or Solaris 10 Update 10 which are likely to have latest versions? I really need to know this. Please guide.

Thanks a lot!

(I am alone in team, new to Solaris, has no one to discuss about Solaris here. :-()
