1. Solaris came with its own GUI and it came w/ a CD that installed Gnome (1.4 I think) but they are not the best (the deskton extention of Gnome crashes [K something] ) but the Sun Desktop is okay...just not much to it. I heard of KDE...is it that much better, and where can I find it?
2. Also, I tried to install the Star Office that came w/ Solaris...could not find an installer on the disc...(if there is one, can some1 direct me 2 it) is there another program to use?
3. I want to kno how to code, but Solaris doesnt not have a compiler (I think thats what I need), where can I get 1? (the one on the disc needs a LICENSE CODE w/ an expiration date....not my type of software)
4. How do I uninstall an application? (I installed a few things that I dont need)
5. How do I set-up the internet? (I already have a router and all that...just need to kno how)
Thanks in advance
(I finally managed to shutdown that machine INIT 5!!!!)
For software, visit www.blastwave.org or www.sunfreeware.com and install gcc for your compiler (it may be on one of the supplemental disks depending on what version of Solaris you have). I think these sites tell you in good detail how to install/remove their software, but if not read the man pages for pkgadd, pkgrm, etc. As for KDE you might want to check out the Solaris KDE site.
I'll let someone else tackle the network connection, since even though I use Solaris occasionally, I'm not that savvy with it. I just put in my IP address, netmask, and default gateway as prompted by the installer, then edited /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/nsswitch.conf to get my DNS settings right and everything worked.
hello and welcome to LQ!
I think that you broke the rules by bumping your post in 2 hours (the rule says 24, not 2) and you really were counter productive because there is a drive to answering 0 reply posts, bumping means that it has one reply...

I think there's no star office bundled with Solaris 9, however, one installs automatically with Solaris 10.

That depends on how you installed them.
If they come from Solaris (SVR4) packages, use the pkgrm command or the graphic "prodreg" utility.
"pkgchk -l -P file" will help you find from what package belongs a file.
Beware of dependancies.
If you build the applications yourself from source, "make uninstall" is an usual way.
hope this isn't a monkey wrench: go to the downloads and pick up generic 5.10 (Solaris 10). it's a lot more "user-friendly" and although conforms to the much maligned Slow-Laris concept, is a very pleasing product once it is installed.
give it a whirl. in 3 easy hours you will have a java/gnome or cde desktop that you Just Can't Do Without!
luck -O.
