Question $WINDOWID in dtterm

Hey guys,

I've got a problem about the $WINDOWID variable I wanted to print into a file, when a new terminal window is opend.

I tried this in Solaris 8, /usr/dt/bin/dtterm:

Code:
echo "User $USER opened terminal window $WINDOWID at 'date' >> /tmp/term.log

The variable for user works, but the one for the window id doesn't!
I only get --> User root opened terminal window at ...
Does anybody know why? They both work in every shell, so that shouldn't be the problem.

thanks
janine

WINDOWID works for me with dtterm, and is in the dtterm manual page:
Code:
WINDOWID The terminal emulator sets the
                       subprocess's WINDOWID environment variable
to the window number of the window in
                       which text is rendered.

If you did't catch it, I didn't meant the command dtterm. As I said, I placed the line in
Quote:
/usr/dt/bin/dtterm
. Mainly it includs:

Code:
echo "User $USER opened terminal window $WINDOWID at " `date` >> /tmp/term.log
/usr/dt/bin/dtterm.original $*
echo "User $USER closed terminal window $WINDOWID at " `date`>> /tmp/term.log
When I open a new window, or close a window, it should show, witch window I closed, but it doesn't.

Okay, the WINDOWID variable is only set in the dtterm command's child processes, but this won't affect variables from the parent process.
