I recently decided to buy a new case for myself, and moved the guts from my slackware 11 box into it, and decided to install slack 12.I formatted the drive, downloaded the iso's, and burnt them (without checking the md5's).
I was able to setup a few partitions (its a 250 gb sata drive) and proceeded with the installation. I get to package "N" and it then hangs on "net-snmp". The CD drive spins down, and then the machine just sits idle.
Judging how it hangs in the same spot each time and from what I've read in the forums I think its a corrupt iso. How do I verify my iso's? I will be/have been burning the iso's with Roxio Easy CD Creator (a separate XP machine).
All of the hardware is new (within the past 3 months):
Intel Celeron 2.5ghz
Western Digital 250gb Sata HD
2 gb ram
This will check the download iso with the known md5sum that you also get with the iso. If you still have install errors then I would be sure the problem is not hardware; possible memory or cdrom device.
You could do a ftp install using the 'lmo-install-0.2.iso', it took about 2 hours for me on DSL for Slackware 12.
I would check the md5sum again from the cli. If you downloaded the cd/dvd iso then be sure to check the md5sum for the original iso. From the cli;
Code:
~#cd /downloadisolocation #cdromiso.iso cdromiso.md5
~#md5sum -c cdromiso.md5 #substitute the correct name to check
I switched out cdroms and got the same slew of package errors during the install.
As for checking the ISOs via the cli, I dont have the ISOs downloaded to the machine I'm installing Slack to. The ISOs are on my XP machine (the way I'm able to connect to the net at all right now), which is a physically separate box, not just an additional partition.
I'm going to try a few things I did some research on today (burning ISOs at slower speeds, burning 'disc all at once', etc). If you have more suggestions, I'll be more than happy to try them :-)

Did you try the lmo-installer that was suggested? This will get you the install of choice.
I was able to install a copy of Ubuntu 6.10, and have no errors. So, maybe this is putting the cart in front of the horse, but I'm going to say that I believe there are no hardware issues.
I've downloaded the Slack 12 ISOs from a different mirror. I'm going to check/burn/attempt an install. If that doesnt work, I will be trying the LMO option (although, I'll likely be back for more help on that, I've never attempted such a task)
Thanks for your ongoing help, I'll report back ASAP.

what kernel are you installing with?
this sounds like a cdrom DMA issue. especially since you have sata HD, maybe an atapi cdrom?
you can try appending
combined_mode=libata libata.atapi_enabled=1
as a kernel boot parameter. another thing to try is:
libata.dma=1
this enables DMA only for HDs - of course I'm assuming since you have sata hd slack kernel is selecting libata.
It appears that the mirror I was downloading the images from is hosting corrupt images. I chose a different mirror, and so far I'm getting no errors in the install process (as well as the md5's checking out to be A-Okay)
I'll post back as soon as its done installing.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I'm one very appreciative newbie :-)

It would be nice if you would post the mirror that you are having problems with!
