Just installed Slackware, install went ok, but I can't seem to get x windows to come up. "startx" is the correct command? When I try that I get an error:
(EE) VGA(0) Virtual height is too small for the hardware (min 1)
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration
Also, how do you modify a file (such as inittab) in text mode?
Keep in mind I am a complete Linux noob, so try to be as descriptive as possible. I was running Redhat 9 for a while, but really didn't play with it much because I couldn't get it to recognize my ethernet card. I am dual booting with win xp, video card is a geforce4 Ti4200, I downloaded and installed the latest driver from nvidia, still no help.
When you installed the NVIDIA drivers, you have to edit your XF86Config file. I don't guess you did that, since you're asking how to edit files in text mode.
The command to start the x-server is ->
$ startx
To change window managers, before you do startx do ->
$ xwmconfig
To edit files outside your home directory, su to root. To edit, for instance, Xf86Config ->
# pico /etc/X11/XF86Config

I had actually modified the x86config file via xf86Setup, but I had picked a generic nvidia driver without realizing that there were more choices available, the GeForce driver was #346 or so. So x-server is up and running, now I just need to get my printer and ethernet card to work...

Good on yah!
What help do you need with them, or do you have another thread going?
As far as the printer goes, I'm not sure where to get working drivers. I'm putting that one on the back burner for now and will try to concentrate on the ethernet card. I started a new thread (failed dependencies: Nforce2 chipset drivers)
I'll check and see if pico is installed....
