When logging into Xserver I get a bash command not found error.

New to linux

I have just installed Slackware 13. After booting the machine.. when I get to the text mode..it asks my login information... login screen I type root, then my password.. it puts me into root then next I type in startx to get into graphical mode, but with an error...command not found.

Any help would be grateful,
Thanks.

Full install?

Whenever you create a new install be sure to create a user account with 'adduser' so you can login as a normal user.
Be sure to add the user to the following groups;

Code:
users floppy audio video cdrom plugdev power netdev
This can be preformed after adding the user to the 'users' group by pressing the 'up-arrow'. This line can be edited to suit the settings for your user.

Be forearned the purists will scold you for logging in as root. Just let those rants go in one ear and out the other.

Do you have X installed? Try the following:

ls /usr/bin/startx
ls /usr/bin/X

If you get error messages then perhaps the X packages did not get installed.

Hi,

Woodsman, I don't agree with the purist mode of root usage but I do believe that a user should be using a normal account for daily use. Most new users will have less of a chance to screw things up via a normal user. 'root' is known for 'superuser' for a reason.

Too lead someone into good habits is to lead the person down a path that will be a good experience.
