What's up with this weird glitch?

Why do the fonts look so glitchy when I try to copy text with my mouse?

Are there any known workarounds for this?

Attached below is a picture to demonstrate that effect.

What desktop environment does this happen under, and does it happen in other desktop environments and window managers?

I'm using the latest version of i3wm. I haven't tried any other WMs as of right now.

I had a similar problem while running -current once. I installed some updates (probably some libraries) and did not recompile the software that gave me those weird glyphs. After I recompiled the software everything was fine again.
