slack 9.0 and fonts

Hello,
I've just installed some ttf on slackware 9.0 making `fc-cache -f [PATH]` and OpenOffice recognise the new fonts.
When I start gimp the new fonts do not exist.
What can I do ?

thx in advance,
kiuma

Hi,

Installing True Type fonts for applications that understand the XFree86 Xft2 extensions in Slackware 9.0 is really easy. That's what you've done so far. Unfortunately, the stable version of Gimp is not one of those programs (although this is one of the features they are working on in the development version), so you will have to do some of the steps you would take with an older version of X to make them available for it.

You will have to add the directory you put the True Type fonts in to your XF86Config font path if you have not done so already. Gimp looks here for its fontpath since it knows nothing about the /etc/fonts/fonts.conf file that Xft2 fontconfig uses. To do this edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config file. Find the "Files" section near the top. In among the FontPath lines you find there (usually right after the Type1 font directory line), add a line that contains the directory you've put your fonts in. Make sure to include the final slash and put the directory string in quotes. For example:
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/TTF/"

You will need a fonts.scale and a fonts.dir file in the font directory you put your True Type fonts in. To make these files, from the command prompt go to the directory and run the commands
/usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontscale
and
/usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir

Restart your X server. You should now have the fonts available in Gimp (unless I forgot to mention something :-).
