Robert "Bob" Dobbs: SubGenius?

I've always heard him mentioned in relation to slackware, in fact the XScreensaver collection installed with slack contains his notorious picture, smoking a pipe.

What's the deal with him, and what is he in relation to slackware?

Yeah, I've been browsing through the (confusing) www.subgenius.com site...

If there's no relation, then why is his image related to slackware at all?

Speculation here, but it may have something to do with the many references to slack, and its apparent importance within the Church.

The Hour of Slack has jack to do with Slackware...

Now please, unless you want to go to Mars, accept that Bob/Slack/SubGenius is only related throught Pat's church affiliation and MOVE ON.

No no, I just spent a lot of time trying to understand the church, and failed at doing so. It's one of the things you don't understand so much as accept and embrace or move on.

Er, OK. Like I said, it was just speculation. Apparently not entirely wrong. Not like anyone's making a big deal out of it.

I think SubGenius is kinda funny I'm fairly sure an important factor in understanding it is the realization that it is parody.

wapcaplet,

My response was for XavierP, not you.

And you are not entirly wrong, Pat is/was very active in the church.

I was just pointing out how "The Hour of Slack" (a church radio show) has no relation to Slackware Linux.

Want to know what "The Hour of Slack" is all about... have a listen >> Just add this URL to XMMS and play!

http://www.sensoryresearch.com/%7Edbachner/hos/Hour_of_Slack_936.ogg

You will quickly come to the idea that "The Hour of Slack" has jack to do with Slackware.

i was interested in this too a few weeks ago...
i looked around on the site and found hundreds of refrences to slack but none to slackware. then i went to the subgenius IRC channel where I was told that Patrick is a member of the church of the subgenius and that the name slackware was in fact derived from it. i couldn't find any more information though.

doesn't seem to be anything much more interesting to say about this. then again, with this little information floating around who says its not a big conspiracy of some sort?

I did the same thing...

Searched their site... went on their chat... asked about slackware/pat... got the same answer.

They must get this a lot.
