Delete your XF86Config file and start from scratch. Even better, as root do a pkgtool and remove the packages that have to do with the Xserver or XFree 86, and then reinstall them again. Then I recomend running xf86config. Make shure that you select the right hardware.
Giving up on Slackware and going back to Red Hat is taking the easy way out. You don't learn anything by choosing a distribution that does everything for you. I mean, if you are really into learning how Linux works, you might as well try a little bit longer. If it worked with Red Hat or windows before, then it has to work with slackware. Sometimes we try to fix problems the "windows way" and that is not the way to go with Linux. Just keep on trying, we will try to help you as much as we can. Post your errors and everything.
