I downloaded the nvidia-kernel and nvidia-driver slackbuilds from slackbuilds.org and compiled them and installed. Generated xorg.conf by nvidia-xconfig. But everytime I'm thrown into a black screen with a blinking cursor at the top.
EDIT: i also tried doing nvidia-switch --nvidia and nvidia-switch --install, still no luck.
I would advise you to try and upgrade to 185.18.36 which is the latest stable Nvidia version instead of the 185.18.31 available in SlackBuilds.org.
I had the same experience with that version on my laptop.
I just downloaded and used the web page installer - NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.36-pkg1.run - to create a driver for my GeForce 6150...
1/ Run the script as root:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.36-pkg1.run
**Note: When the Nvidia install asks you if you want to download a kernel interface from Nvidia website, tell it 'No' and have it compile it's own driver**
**Note 2: Choose to alter the xorg.conf file manually**
2/ xorg settings are auto-generated now... but I created a file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf with just an entry for my nvidia card:
<code>
Section "Device"
Identifier "Device0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA"
EndSection
