Moving /etc/file/ out

What about moving /etc/file/ out of /etc/ because (IMHO) it has nothing in common with a configuration?

Not sure where to yet but e.g. Debian uses /usr/lib/file/magic.mgc for the BLOB.

From file.SlackBuild in slackware64-current:
Code:
# Make the default data directory /etc/file like it has always been:
zcat $CWD/file.etc.file.diff.gz | patch -p1 --verbose || exit 1
My guess is that you'll have to provide a more convincing rationale that "others do otherwise" or "this location doesn't look logical to me" to convince Patrick Volkerding to change that. Like a practical benefit, for instance, worth the additional maintenance work for him. But indeed this could be a bad guess.

No BLOBs in /etc/, better maintainability (what a word!), nicer to etckeeper?

If it isn't broke, don't fix it.

Are you on different medication opty? The forum is suddenly full of "optimization" proposals for Slackware. IMO, these should be asked at the beginning of a development cycle, not the end. And otherwise, but that is my personal opinion and everyone is free to disagree, most of these proposals seem irrelevant "changes for the sake of changes".

Just trying to empty my ideas queue.

Code:
opty@qeporkak:~$ sudo du -hbd 1 /etc/ | sort -nr | head -3
23919468        /etc/
8271280 /etc/udev
7835002 /etc/file

Last edited by opty; 03-27-2021 at 02:13 PM. Reason: adding du
