The MLED project finally gets its own website with lots of information as well as detailed documentation. The entire website is available in english and in french. A little reminder for those of you who don't know MLED: the project's ambition is to provide a full-blown, lightweight, rock-solid and mature Linux desktop for professional users, based on Slackware and Xfce.

There are a couple of stale MLED-related threads on LQ. I suggest you let them slowly glide into oblivion, as they contain lots of outdated - if not downright wrong - information. From now on, this here shall be considered the "official" MLED thread. Since the first public version based on Slackware 13.37 (private versions cobbled together by Daniel de Kok and myself date back to 2006), MLED has seen a few roadblocks and iterations, but I guess it's fair to say that in 2015 the project is definitely here to stay. It's been running on nearly all my clients' desktops for quite some time, and their feedback contributed to turn it into a snappy, full-featured and reliable production environment. But I'll let you be the judge of that.

Once you receive the confirmation email, you can discuss all MLED-related things by posting to mled@lists.tuxfamily.org.

Starting from now, the mailing list is the "official" MLED channel for getting help, reading announcements, discussing the project, etc. I won't answer any MLED-related questions here on LQ. Please use the mailing list for that.

A quote from the new MLED Website

I am grateful for the chance to ride on kikinovak's coat tails, so I hope he finds lots of paying customers!

I read the Slackware README_CRYPT.txt, README.initrd and README-LVM.txt and kikinovak's MLED Installation Guide in it's original text file format.

Then I wrote out a set of steps combining those readmes with the settings for this old Thinkpad X60 with its SSD. I ended up with a simple desktop that meets my modest use cases and that seems responsive and stable as well as protecting my data against casual theft or my own forgetfulness (I leave bags on buses now and again).

A word about the documentation format. While usually I tend to write my HOWTOs in simple text format, I decided to publish the Installation Guide and the Configuration Guide in XHTML markup with a bit of CSS. I don't know why, but many people seem to shy away from simple text HOWTOs.

I just read the installation guide and it doesn't appear to be very noob friendly.

I think that although MLED's usage intends to be (and is) newbies friendly, it does not assume that installation be made by newbies.

I'm very well aware of that. That being said:

1. It's intended for professional users, e. g. users who consider their system as a tool to get some work done.
2. Security update support is extended, at least compared to Debian, Fedora, Mageia, openSUSE, etc.
3. It's very (very very) reliable.
4. Professional clients might prefer this to "Linux From Slack", "Beyond Linux From Slack", "Least Evil Linux" or "Boneheaded UNIX clone".
5. Marketing, hey!

Hello there kikinovak, i always enjoy reading your posts.
I went to your site and liked it with one small caveat.
Could you please replace that circuit board picture with the old picture
of that beautifull village in France?.
It really gave me a nice warm fuzzy feeling on seeing it.

Heh, now that's a funny request. I just used the company's site template for the new site, and I needed at least some detail to differentiate the two visually. Hence the circuit board picture. But I'll think about something else.

Very nice web site, Nicolas, good job. While browsing it I only noticed a few minor issues.

After going to the file tree (www.microlinux.fr/microlinux/), either through the "File tree" and the "Fichiers" menu entries, when I want to go back to the main web site through the "Parent Directory" link of the root page I end up in microlinux.fr instead. Perhaps this is what you intended, however I couldn't find a link back to microlinux.eu in the "MLED" section of microlinux.fr: as far as I could see they are all pointing to microlinux.fr. Perhaps it might be a good idea to point the "MLED" menu entries of microlinux.fr, as well as the "Parent Directory" link of the file tree's root page (www.microlinux.fr/microlinux/), directly to microlinux.eu?

Also, the following "Slackware Linux" links in the "MLED" section of the right-hand columns, as well as in the first paragraphs of index.php and index_fr.php, are broken:
