You have to install the development series of packages. I think it is called the "d" series, it includes all the tools required to compile your kernel and other packages.

mount /mnt/cdrom

cd /mnt/cdrom/slackware/d

pkgtool

and then select install packages from the current directory

and select them all (probably with the spacebar)

After you're done installing

umount /mnt/cdrom

But why do you want to mess with the kernel when you are a newbie ?

Thank you very much for your great help
I successfully installed the pkgs
But when I started menuconfig
I am getting following error messages
'Unable to find the Ncurses libraries. You must have Ncurses installed in order to make menuconfig'
Could you please tell me how to solve this problem

I suggest u next time install everything when u install slackware, it is not a good idea. But it save u the time from choosing what to install n what not (that won't be not a easy stuff as newbie).

Btw, 8.1 was somewhat historical, why don't try 9.1 ? The kernel there must also be 2.2.x, when u wonna compile kernel then do it with a new kernel, but be warned, without update/upgrade u might got some gcc-lib obsoleted error when u get the latest 2.4 or 2.6 kernel. Just a little light in the dark for ur slack advanture.

If u don't now where to step further with ur current situation, I would suggest u better try to install swaret, make an edit on /etc/swaret.conf then "swaret --update; swaret --upgrade", rather than compiling kernel. Or trying to install 9.1 in another partition, that will possible give u more fun, perhaps than to config kernel.

The most real reason for compiling kernel is when u got some hardware that won't work without compiling a new kernel, hope that was of infos ..
