How come I have to restart my computer for network changes to work?

I'm sure theres a way to do it without a reboot, but I dont know how

Whenever I use netconfig to input my network parameters (Static IP), the only way I can access the Internet or ping machines is to restart the computer. I'm wondering what is actually happening when I restart? I try using ifconfig eth0 down/up, but that doesn't seem to do the trick. Thanks

ifconfig should do the trick, maybe you're forggeting to set the gateway with route command.
Try running: /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 stop && /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 start

gbonvehi,
since 10.2 there's a " restart " option in the rc.inet1 script.
so life is a little easier now.
