Nope, I just did :

amos:~$ glxgears
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
493 frames in 6.0 seconds = 82.167 FPS
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
amos:~$

Which ran gears, until I killed the window. Does glxgears run under any other window managers?

Cheers
Amos

Try fiddling with your XF86Config file. And for subsequent posts, give more information.
What is the driver you're using, something from X or a proprietary version from NVidia or ATI? In your XF86Config file, you may be using the 'vesa' driver by default, maybe you'll have to switch to something else to get glxgears to run? It's a frightening thought, but you might have to read some documentation.

I believe you need to increase the colour depth in /etc/X11/XF86Config(-4 if you have such a file). When i tried out glxgears with different configurations i got that error when i were using lower than 16bpp.
