Current: Alsa problem on sound. 'Groundhog Day' type problem

I have a clean install of current here and I'm having sound issues - No sound, to be precise.

To cut to the chase, when I press F6 in Alsamixer to choose a soundcard, I get
Code:
       (default)
default: HDA Intel PCH
       enter device name
(default) is highlighted and selected, and there's no sound. Pavucontrol is blank. When I select the HDA ~Intel, every important thing is muted and set at zero volume. I go through them, set them correctly, exit, and run 'alsactl store' as root. But next reboot, (default) is set, everything's muted & set at zero on the HDA Intel, and I have to start over.

Is there some way I can get rid of the (default) entry?

Bah! Put this down to me being a complete newbie on fresh installs.

Solution:
Code:
chmod +x rc.alsa
Why start pulse without alsa is a mystery to be solved by whoever dreams these things up. Maybe somebody has some subtle checks to see if I read the gigabytes of documentation, in which case I failed...

It's not executable here and sound (through the default pulseaudio configuration) is working fine on my machines. The rc.pulseaudio script isn't executable either, btw.

Sound works with no changes to default settings here... I'm also using the Intel built-in sound.
