Can rpm2tgz break your system?

Hello,

A couple packages I have needed to install did not come in a slackware 9.1 .tgz format, so I downloaded the rpm and used rpm2tgz. The .tgz installed perfectly (it was licq btw). I also used rpm2tgz to install the propriatary ATI display drivers.

Now I was wondering, can rpm2tgz mess up my system? Is it best to install non-slackware packages with rpm2tgz or to just get the source and use checkinstall?

thanks

Casimir

rpm2tgz works at times but its probably best to just get it as a source tarball and install by those means. I've only messed with rpm2tgz a couple of times and wasn't happy with how it installs, etc. And if you really want a tgz package for Slackware, just go to www.linuxpackages.net in which I found several for different versions.. http://www.linuxpackages.net/search_...name=licq&ver=

thanks

I tried linuxpackages.net, but they don't have any 9.1 packages. Is installing a package from a lower version a good thing to do?

Thanks

Well considering that the latest version of licq is 1.2.7 and from July of 2003 before Slackware 9.1 was out, I really see no harm in it. The only thing I can think of is some older libs that might be required but I doubt you'll run into any problems.

I'd download, install and make a package designed for 9.1 for you but I think licq requires qt to be installed, which I lack on my desktops as I steer clear of KDE and the such..
