can't print to samba server

My windows computer cannot print, but printing works fine if I print locally. The printer is connected to the computer in my sig, windows is on a different computer. When I print from notepad it looks as if it is printing fine, but I do not see the document in the printer properties. Than again, sometimes I do and when that happens it just sits there indefinitely.

I just noticed another oddity. If I open explorer and type in \\mycomp and then input the password, it shows my printer and when I right click it, it is as if it is not connected. But, if I open the Printers and Faxes control panel, it looks as though there is nothing wrong.

Here is my smb.conf:

http://www.geocities.com/rush830/files/smb.conf.txt

And some log files:

http://www.geocities.com/rush830/files/print.txt

I guess the main error is "Can't become connected user!" or "getpeername failed" Searching around there's an option for an smbusers file, but I couldn't find any command to enable that file. And that's about the best results I've been able to come up with.

Oops. Another error that comes up is, "Unable to print file to printer - client-error-document-format-not-supported" I found this website that said since the application doesn't include certain filters(PostScript?) and can only be printed by the application itself and needs to be converted to a standard format. Though it was talking about local printing and not through a network. Could it be that linux needs to convert the file before it can print it?

OK, If I goto aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd:631 and print a test page it works! Yay! At least it's a start. I still have the same symptoms otherwise.

OH, and I can read and write to my file share with no problems at all.

Any ideas how to config smb.conf correctly?

Problem solved!

Quote:
4.3. CUPS Configuration
Windows printer drivers format their output for the printer before sending it across the network. You must configure CUPS to accept the pre-formatted output by uncommenting the following line from /etc/cups/mime.convs:

application/octet-stream application/vnd.cups-raw 0 -

Also uncomment the following line from /etc/cups/mime.types:

application/octet-stream

Now CUPS must be told to allow connections from other machines on the network. Add these lines to /etc/cups/cupsd.conf:

<Location /printers>
AuthType None
Order Deny,Allow
Deny From None
Allow From All
</Location>

As in the Samba configuration, this configuration allows any computer to connect to your printers and is not recommended for computers on untrusted networks. For information about tightening access control to your printers, see the cupsd.conf man page and the CUPS documentation.

Finally, restart cups with the following command:

/etc/init.d/cupsys restart

Your Linux printers should now be shared to Windows PCs on the LAN. Follow the usual steps for adding a network printer to your Windows PCs, and remember to print a test page.
