Have you patched your version of sshd recently?

What version is it, anyway?

ALSO:
Run "top" and "vmstat" to check your memory usage. See if there are any "memory hogs"; see if you're hitting swap space. Not necessarily related to the problem at hand - but certainly not a Good Thing, either!

Running Slackware 13.1 (following -current).

Upgraded sshd on 4/29 (openssh-5.5p1-x86_64-1). This is the first time I've seen the error.

Current, mem usage:

(top)
Mem: 2055688k total, 2010744k used, 44944k free, 150288k buffers
Swap: 2723008k total, 340896k used, 2382112k free, 993232k cached

(vmstat)
