"fatal error: no screen found"

Hi,

I installed MDK 9.1 on my new computer as 3th OS after 98 and XPs.

But I had 2 problems :

- 1st: not found monitor

- 2nd: not found NIC card,which is onboard

Bad is that i rebooted even with not founded monitor,i was trying to set all kinda monitors,but any didn't work.So now i have command and not working monitor and internet.

Computer is:

MSI K7N2 w/ Nvidia 2,XP 2500+ Barton, 512 Kingston DDR 2700 333mhz,onboard LAN (and sound),GForce 4 64mb,......monitor Philips 107 T 17"


Can anyone help me how, in command of course,to fix monitor and find LAN to get Xfree?

use 'xf86config'.this will create a new X config file.(/etc/X11/XF86Config)
remove any XF86Config-4 files.(cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.bak,rm /etc/X11/XF86Config-4).remove all X log files.(rm /var/log/XFree*).then do a 'startx'.if that doesnt work,list the errors found in the new X log file.

i found 2 errors:

VGA(0): driver can't support depth 24

screen(s) found but none have usable configuration


...and wierd is that this computer I'm online now(old one) is using same monitor without any probs....I'm using IOGEAR monitor switch.....so I'm switching between computers on same monitor

What i found that I can't switch (key "scroll lock") from new computer (that has problems) to the old one (I'm on the internet now). Its IOGEAR switch is using key "scroll lock" to switch between computers on same monitor.
So when I need go here on net i have to reboot new computer (bad one),and it switchs ok.

I'll try it without IOGEAR switch,seems to me like it should be problem.

download and install the nvidia driver.(see my sig).that will do the trick.also,you amy try a lower resolution,like 16 bit.

i tried lower resolutions and all kinda,but it didn't work.

I'm thinking isn't this problem because Linux can't connect on the internet?(as my 2nd problem) Ifconfig shows only LO..not IP

And question about Nvidia driver,how to install it?Because i can't get LAN working yet.Only way is probably download it on 98 Win (on same machine) and "somehow" install it from Linux command.

Sorry I'm newbie and I'm just trying Linux on my new computer because this old one is pretty slow. As u can see in my signature .)

Download the nvidia driver.(http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d..._ia32_1.0-4496).read the instuctions given there.(carefully.) and install it.(read the README file.it is quite simple.if you find any problem,post it here or read http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ticle&artid=30).

About getting the downloaded thing from windows,let you have downloaded it to D drive.
1.in linux,make a directory like /mnt/D.(or whatever).

mkdir /mnt/D

2.find out the corresponding device drive with 'fdisk -l'.

fdisk -l

3.mount the windows partition like

mount -t vfat /dev/hda5 /mnt/D

assuming that hda5 is D.
4.move to /mnt/D and install the driver.

cd /mnt/D

.
i have explained it from the very begining.
again, dont forget to read the README carefully.

Why is it so complicated?

Looks like I'm one of the milion others that have problems with NVIDIA drivers.

I tried to install the NVIDIA driver,i did succesfully.

But still when i do xf86config i can't make it workable.
It says something about vertical or horizontal setting not set correctly..too low...well looks like i need look at the monitor's web page and found those stupid settings,which i didn't need before on my old box I'm on now ,and using same monitor.

Isn't wierd?

Other thing,my eth0 not found as i said before.This should be problem too.

Sorry I'm newbie.I'm tired from slow Konqueror at my old box.this is why I"m trying install Linux on my new faster box.

so i found Horizontal and Vertical numbers of my monitor.
I put it exactly in the xf86config and now it says:

VGA(0): virtual height (0) is too small for hardware (min 1)

what that means?

sorry my english is bad.....

and again after hundreds of trying it says again:

VGA(0): driver can't support depth 24

So if I'm right,then it still can't see NVIDIA driver already installed.

I was lookin for xf86config-4 to change it,but I removed before.

Is there any way I can get it back?

Because I've read that i have to change "nv" to "nvidia" and others in XF86Config-4,which i don't have.

Or maybe i should reinstall Linux again.But i don't know how.Too complicated.

if you dont have XF86Config-4,/etc/X11/XF86Config will be your X config file.change 'nv' to 'nvidia' in it.also there are someother options also that has to be changed.read http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ticle&artid=30 carefully.

thanx for trying to help me,but there is not any option to change "nv" to "nvidia" on so on.....

There is just basic settings about mouse,keyboard,monitor settings,graphic card settings (vendor,company,type of hardware...),but not any place where i should change "nv" to "nvidia",which is the problem.

Seems to me like there is something missing.

Isn't it easier to erased (somehow) all Linux and do it again from the start?

It is my fault ,that i rebooted a box and didn't set its monitor settings.Any didn't work so i tried to reboot and start it,but not succesfully.

Well it is getting so fair,glad i have at least old box running .)

when i did "vi" of the f86config i found "vga" driver instead of "nv".So i couldn't change it.

I'm trying all kinda ways,but useless.

When i do xf86config there is not any option Nvidia to set it up correctly.
I do option"2"- VGA compatibille,there is not even later anything where i wish to put Nvidia info.Only vendor name.Which doesn't help.
Its xf86config doesn't have any option where i can put those graph card numbers.

I'm tired.

Don't u think that reinstall Linux should be more usefull then messing around and around and around?

now on my old box (only Linux working,where I'm reading Linuxquestions) I'm having trouble.

Looks like someone hacked me.

For few last days (or weeks) when i started Kde,it always showed some old page i was visiting long ago.Everyday same page.

I wasn't worry until yestarday.I was reading here at Linuxquestions and then mouse stopped working.So i rebooted and mouse still wont work.
The funny thing is that now when i start Kde i have page i last visited,Linuxquestions.But mouse wont work.

Isn't it wierd?

I can't get mouse working,because I'm newbie who just can't work without mouse.

So now I'm on my new box on XP ( second boot where I'm trying to get Linux working).

Getting tired.

Also,I'm waiting for new Half-Life 2 game and I'll get ATI Radeon 128mb ,for sure.
So it should be easier to wait few weeks than trying this f*ckin NVIDIA card.Glad i bought its card for $25 only .)

I guess i need to look here for an info about why mouse won't work.

for helping,but it didn't work.There is problem somewhere else.It should be myself,or i didn't install MDK 9.1 correctly before.So i can't put thoe numbers in xf86config.
I'll wait for new graph card.
