i currently switched over to Sabayon to try it out, and I was just wondering what you guys think is better for Sabayon. Either Gnome or KDE. i usually stick to gnome but kde looked pretty nice, but it seems very different and i also heard that gnome is less heavy than kde. what are the advantages/disadvantages of gnome and kde. which 1 shuld i stick to?
Well for sabayon it doesn't really make any difference. Sabayon support both, so its up to you.
Its mostly a personal choice, its very little between them in performance. Particular application you like might be for one of the other, but even then, most apps wil run on either (with the correct libraries installed).
Linus T himself was a KDE fan (saying it was better designed), but resently KDE had some stability issues (KDE4), so even he has changed to Gnome. I am guessing the stability on KDE4.x is being addressed so might not be a problem any more.
You also have environments like XFCE for slightly older hardware and still lighter ones for the very old machines.
I am not as "religous" on this as many people. My main system is Gnome (2.24). I also have an old machine with XFCE4. This one also has KDE 3.5.9 on it, but most of the time I use XFCE on this one (only KDM for login etc).
I'm a kde 4.2 man myself, and I can personally vouch for the fact that equal development time and thought is given to both gnome and kde in Sabayon. I personally have no stability issues with KDE 4.2 at all, 4.0 and 4.1 are rife with them though. I really like the run menu and widgets for KDE 4.2 - you can get anything as a widget.
