upgrade pre-installed mysql

i just installed rh9 and THOUGHT i'd chosen to not install mysql. i tried installing the latest rpm but it conflicts with mysql-3.23.54a-11

i can't use rpm -e. so, what do i have to do to get the latest version installed? i have a feeling that i'm gonna run into similar problems with apache and php and anything else i wanna install.

someone with prior experience, please help. any advice or links to threads or webpages would be great

Your subject line says it all... "upgrade".

Check out the details of the "-U" flag in the rpm man page

well, that didnt work. i got a lot of errors saying that {the new mysql} conflicts with file from package {old mysql} when I do rpm -ivh .....
i got the following errors when doing rpm -U ... libmysqlclient.so.10 is needed by (installed) libdbi-dbd-mysql yadda yadda..and a total of 4 like that.

I inserted the install disk of red hat and tried to do an 'upgrade' hoping i could remove the stuff but apparantly, nothing is installed weird.
