unsafe map file

OS: RH 9.0
On bootup and in maillog, I have the following error messages:
NOQUEUE: SYSERR(root): hash map "Alias0": unsafe map file /etc/aliases.db: Permission denied
And
NOQUEUE: SYSERR(root): Cannot create database for alias file /etc/aliases

ls -l /etc/aliases* ## gives me
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1181 May 18 2002 /etc/aliases
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1180 May 18 2002 /etc/aliases~
-rw-r----- 1 smmsp root 12288 Sep 12 2003 /etc/aliases.db
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1343 Feb 24 2003 /etc/aliases.rpmnew

What should permissions and ownership be for these files to correct this matter?
Thanks
Tim

On my RH 9 I see the following:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1343 Oct 28 2003 /etc/aliases
-rw-r----- 1 root smmsp 12288 Oct 17 13:59 /etc/aliases.db

It appears you have owner and group reversed on your aliases.db. (The other two files appear to just be copies so shouldn't matter.)

Also verify your permissions on /etc itself:

drwxr-xr-x 57 root root 4096 Oct 17 14:06 /etc

You are correct. Looks like this is fixed.
Many thanks!
