rpm database missing entries?

Redhat 9:

I have been updating packages, when my /var/lib/rpm/Packages file exceeded the file limit size.

I did a
ulimit -f 80000

and then did rpm --rebuilddb, but there are several packages (kernel is one) that I *know* I installed that don't appear when I do:
rpm -qa <package>

and furthermore, when I try to install a package that depends on them, it fails with dependency checking.

How do I fix this? Do I have to reinstall? Am I hosed?

Thanks,
Dave
