RH 5 or 6 RAM Requirements

The non-profit I'm helping has a Celeron (450 I think) and 128 MB of RAM. I have CDs of RH 5 and 6 in books I borrowed from the Library.

Are these older versions of RH RAM hungry? Most distros I see now prefer 256 MB RAM.

Thanks for your Help,

-salman

While Gnome and KDE desktop environments need large memory environments, current Fedora also includes the Xfce desktop environment. You can run quite comfortably in 128MB.

Xfce on Fedora Core 4?

I do have Fedora Core 4, but I don't see a reference to
Xfce or any Graphical User Environment in the online notes. How does one choose this Graphical User Environment during installation?

Thanks so much for this tip,

salmanal

In FC4, you should just need to:

yum groupinstall XFCE

Then issue the command:

switchdesk XFCE

When you logout and then logback in, you should be in Xfce.

Update: To do this during installation for a low memory system, you can perform a minimal install, then run the yum and switchdesk.

Thanks so much for your prompt reply. I think I'll have the machine
back to the children's center as Promised Thursday.

I know the machine will run Billy G's mess, but I couldn't do that to children.
