Programs open slowly

I just installed Redhat 9 in a dual boot with win98. 700MHz AMD Duron, 256MB PC166 SDRAM and 20G 7200RPM HD (7G allocated for win).
The installation seemed to go smooth and Linux boots ok but programs or applications take up to 30 or more seconds to open.
I'm new to Linux and was wondering if this is normal.

Yup its normal. But which programs are you talking about? I used to run redhat 9 on a P3 450MHz and 192MB SDRAM. The longest time any app that required to load on my system was OpenOffice. It required anywhere between 30 to 45 seconds to load.

Well that sucks. And just like you the OpenOffice programs are the slowest.
I'm trying to move away from windows but this doesn't help me.
I've got a copy of Mandrake I'm going to see if it's any better.
If not, oh well.
Thanks for the reply.

Yes it sucks. But you need to understand that RH 9 is somewhat old. The 2.4.x kernels are terribly good for server applications but slow. KDE too built into it is slow though GNOME is fast its not user friendly. I too agree with you. Get a distro which has a 2.6.x kernel, they are much faster. Also, make sure KDE 3.2 and GNOME 2.6 is built into it.

BTW the 2.6.x kernel is blazing fast. It opens your programs atleast twice as fast =P
