glibc 2.2 installation on RHEL

Hello,
I am using RHEL 3.0 machine. It has got gcc 3.2.3 and glibc 2.3.2 installed. I have been developing one library in C and it will be used by some other application. Since those applications are built using glibc 2.2 version, I am supposed to build my library in glibc 2.2. The problem is I am not able to install glibc 2.2 version. If I install glibc 2.2 it says gcc higher version is installed. I removed gcc. I have downloaded gcc 2.96 and when I try to install this it throws lot of errors expecting some directory sturcture to be changed. My questions are
How can I install glibc2.2 with original gcc be in place?
Which version of gcc I should install if I have to use glibc 2.2?

Many thanks.

Kars.

Install the compat-glibc-7.x-2.2.4.32.6.i386.rpm package and required dependencies.
