Centos - console hangs after inactivity period

Hello
I am having a problem with a Centos 4.4 server.
It generally works fine, samba is fine, nothing wrong appears in logs but the text consoles hang after a period of inactivity. I can do without them but it is very annoying.
It only happens on phisically connected keyboard/mouse consoles, SSH sessions work fine. If the console has not been logged on it stays responsive with the login prompt. But after login if not used for ... 20-30 mins it will hang. Memtest passed.

Could you please direct me as to where to look at and how to kill those non responsive-terminals without rebooting the PC.

Many thanks beforehand

Yuri

Sounds like a possible power management issue, maybe with the BIOS or maybe with the OS.
You might want to disable some sleep states in either or both.

Spot on, Lenard!

apm=off acpi=off in menu.lst did it! Chainsaw approach but who cares - it is a server :-)

Many thanks!
