CENTOS 4.4 and GNOME

I have just installed a brand new copy of CENTOS 4.4 and chose to install GNOME and X Components as a GUI. After the install successfully installed, I rebooted the machine and it brings me to a login prompt which I am going to assume that it is init level 3. I attempted to run
PHP Code:
startx
but it looked like it was going to load GNOME but it brought me back to the command prompt. How would one configure the gui to start automatically and how can I get GNOME to start manually at a root prompt?

When GNOME failed to start, were there any error messages printed on your screen. To start a system in GUI mode, edit /etc/inittab and change id:3:initdefault: to id:5:initdefault:.
