Question Can't start X server - kernel 2.6.4.1-302

Hi,
I tried to upgrade my RH9 2.4.30-9 kernel to 2.6.4.1-302 using RPM.
First there was a /dev/mapper/control: "Is device-mapper driver missing from kernel?" error.
When I rebooted I received a lot of modules not being loaded errors and X wouldn't start. These are the errors (not in the correct order):
Fatal: USB core not found; module hid not found
xf86OpenSerial: cannot open device /dev/psaux;
Open APM Failed (/dev/apm_bios);
Failed to initialize core devices;
Mouse0: cannot open input device;
XIO: Fatal IO error 104;

Please point me in the right direction...can/should I revert to my previous kernel and compile from source? or is it a fixable situation?

p.s
There was no error when I installed initscripts, lvm2 and upgraded the modutils package as was necessary by the rpm, so I assumed those to be OK.

Many Thanks,
Liron.

The problem is simply point the finger to the configuration errors.
Just boot from ur old kernel and rerun configuration and select all the modules and others (shown in the errors) and recompile ur kernel.

I'm still new...so I went the *rpm* way to keep it simple this time.
I know how to boot on my old kernel, but could you or someone else please explain how to "rerun" configuration, and recompile the new kernel to work properly? I can't use "make" "./configure" with *.rpm

Thanks again
Liron.

Download these
1. module-init-tools
2. initscripts
3. mkinitrd
4. kernel sourcecode (2.6.5 stable)
5. e2fsprogs

unzip it to a folder..
in terminal go to that folder and follow these
upgrade ur module init tools
<ur module init tools dir>#./configure --prefix=/
<ur module init tools dir>#make
<ur module init tools dir>#make moveold
<ur module init tools dir>#make install
<ur module init tools dir>#generate-modprobe.conf /etc/modprobe.conf
install other downloaded things also same procedure without 'make moveold' and 'generate-modprobe.conf /etc/modprobe.conf'

if u download mkinitrd as rpm then use #rpm -U mkinitrd...

goto the linux kernel directory (linux-2.6.5)

#make mrproper
#make menuconfig

here u have to select ramdisk support and initrd supprot into the kernel
select all other required things and save

#make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install && make install

that's all
Good Luck..

Thanks,
I changed my rc.sysinit, fstab, mtab and halt files according to http://thomer.com/linux/migrate-to-2.6.html steps.
(sysfs loads right after proc)
also upgraded module-init-tools to ver 3, so modprobe.conf seems to have
the USB controller usb-uhci installed now.
alas, when I reboot, I still get a Fatal error when the system tries to load mouse, keyboard, usb modules. it can't find: /sys/bus/usb/devices
Can anyone help...what else is missing?
