It depends what for?
I liked very much 1.08, 2.12 and I think 4.x are great
4.2 is a good distribution but the clock is disturbing me I don't like the vista type shnickshnack.
Puppy used to be small and never the less it did every thing fine. The programselection is perfect.
The wizards are well chosen so that there is excellent hardwarededection
even the installation-wizard is perfect. I tested about 60 distributions but Puppy is unic with this perfect but simple installation-wizard.
What I like very much with Slax is the possibility of adding programs via a script directly into the iso for downloading. That would be a great idea also for Puppy.
I really lack good translations into german, italian and spanish.
But a Puppy is a must with every installation I do (it helps me so much also in making the service to other operating systems)
I don't like the latest version.
it's losing it's edge and getting bloated like knoppix.
i don't like the way it reads the CD all the time and you cannot eject the CD anymore like in 4.1 and below.
Really? Are you not saving the pup_420.sfs and pup_save.2fs files? You only need to do that once, then Puppy loads much faster and you can use the drive after it's booted.

I also prefer the previous Puppies. I think there comes more and more not necessary things with it (irritating eyecandy). But Puppy is still far away from beeing bloated.
Also Knoppix is a very good distro, with good hardware detection and beginnerfriendly.
I think I understood what you wanted to say but the example was chosen badly.

Hmm
well I have used puppy for years and just went from 4.1 to 4.2
it migrated my pup_save files
as it usually does.
and noticed I couldn't eject the CD.
it's never happened in the past when i upgraded.
I will try again.

well, i worked it out.
when you upgrade an old puppy save file it doesn't
copy the pup420.sfs on to the partition.
so you have to start in ram mode, make a new pup save
then it copies the 4.2 sfs.
subsequently you can go back to the previous pup save.

I take it all back.
puppy is still indispensable.
Excellent news.
Alternatively, (and for future upgrades) all you need to do is manually copy the .sfs file from the CD to the HDD partition, then reboot the CD.
