Saving in .doc format

When I try to save a file in .doc format with the default text editor program, it doesn't work. Perhaps I need some sort of translating driver? any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

You won't be able to save in .doc unless you are using something like Open Office. Even then, .doc is kind of a vague concept, different versions of Office have slightly different formats of the .doc file, so you need to figure out which one you specifically need.
